Latino Center News

Latino Center News
Title V Latino Center for Excellence

Extension Granted until January 2010

Good NEWS folks. The Latino Center received the extension from the Department of Education. YAHOOO!! Governors State University is now evaluating the process to make sure the department can stay open until January! We are half way there. We will be able to support your academic needs for a longer period of time.

Mentoring Opportunity

Benefits of having a mentor vary from support during critical periods, exposure to diverse experiences, greater knowledge of career factors, and professional networking. With this great possibility of continuing with the Latino Center for a longer period of time, Mr. Cantu would like to offer to all cohort members the opportunity to interact with a Peer Mentor. New Peer Mentors are being recruited and joining the Latino Center. If you do not have a mentor and would like to take advantage of this opportunity, please fill out this online request: Mentee Matching Form or email me at m-teixeira@govst.edu with your request.

Online Latino Community

The Latino Center is always promoting education and academic achievement. Because many LCE members are working adults with little time to attend enrichment seminars and activities that promote academic excellence, a new idea came to administrators. Why not create an online group that supports students by increasing networking opportunities and improving academic skills. Make new friends and have access to enrichment seminars when you use WebCT and access the Title V Latino Center - Online Learning Community. Check it out and let us know what you think!

Gift of Literacy

Do you feel like you need to give back to your community but cannot find time to do so? Here is your chance... The Latino Center is join forces with Aquinas Literacy Center to offer the Gift of Literacy at GSU to our community members who do not speak English. The Aquinas offers free workshops to certify ESL Tutors. After certified, students will volunteer 1 ½ h/week to tutor basic English. It’s good for your soul, and it’s good for your resume. Next three day training session will be on October 14, 21, and 28 from 6-9pm. Let me know if you are interested by sending an email to m-teixeira@govst.edu. I have more information if you wish to join the program.
