DFI Graduate Student Scholarships

The Diversifying Higher Education Faculty in Illinois (DFI) Program Board and the Illinois Board of Higher Education (IBHE) recently announced the release of the 2010-2011 application for the DFI Fellowship Program. The DFI program provides competitive need-based financial awards to underrepresented students in graduate degree programs in participating Illinois higher education institutions. Program funding for the 2010-2011 academic year (FY2011) is contingent on the availability of funds appropriated by the Governor and Illinois General Assembly.

Completed application materials must be submitted to Dean Sherilyn Poole in C1330 on or before February 19, at 5 p.m. For more information and application forms, visit www.ibhe.org/DFI/application.htm.

2010 United States Hispanic Leadership Institution (USHLI) National Conference

Happy New Year!

The Latino Center would like to invite cohort members to participate of the 2010 United States Hispanic Leadership Institution (USHLI) National Conference. USHLI is a Latino organization aimed to empower civic responsibility and leadership.

The conference will be on February 17-20, 2010 at Sheraton Chicago Hotel & TowersChicago, Illinois. For more information about this event, please go to http://www.ushli.net/ and select Conferences & Events.

The Latino Center will pay for the first ten cohort members who reply to my email (m-teixeira@govst.edu ) indicating they wish to participate of this event. The Latino Center will pay for the students’ registration only. Any other expense, such as lunch or lodging, will be on the students.

Please, email me as soon as possible if you would like to participate.

In addition, if you wish to participate and are not one of the first 10 students to reply, USHLI is also looking for volunteers.

1) Applicants must demonstrate a thorough understanding of the writing process. That is, W.C. Consultants must be good writers. Consultants will be trained in the specific approach of GSU's writing center
2) Applicants must be skilled in basic computer technology using Microsoft Office e-mail, using templates to respond to students, helping students determine why they have problems with online submissions, and navigating various websites. While some training for the specific position will be offered, the applicant must possess basic skills.
3) Applicants must demonstrate their ability to work well with students; they must communicate well, listen well, respond in an appropriate manner, and demonstrate patience. This ability will be determined through an interview with the Writing Center Coordinator
