Governor of the Central Bank of Brazil to Visit Chicago

The Governor of the Central Bank of Brazil, Henrique Meirelles, will visit Chicago on November 4-5, 2010. During his stay, Mr. Meirelles will participate in several events in his honor, promoted by major institutions in the city. At the University of Chicago, where he will give a lecture on the perspectives for Brazil’s economy, Mr. Meirelles will be honored for his distinguished leadership at the head of the Brazilian Central Bank. This event will take place at 5:00 p.m. CST, at room C07 of the Booth School of Business, located at 5807 South Woodlawn Avenue.

Analysts acknowledge that Mr. Meirelles’ key role in the implementation of Brazil’s monetary policy has assured the country’s low inflation and overall economic stability. The country has impressed observers for its resilience during the recent financial crisis, and is now poised to grow at a robust rate of at least 7% in 2010. Latin America’s largest economy, Brazil has risen rapidly to the echelon of the economic powers, and has become one of the engines of the post-crisis economic recovery.

Prior to his appointment to the Central Bank, Mr. Meirelles conducted a successful career at Bank Boston. He retired in 1999, after presiding over the international operations of that financial institution. In 2002, he was elected congressman, but resigned from office upon receiving the invitation to hold his current position.
